Poetry in translation:

"English to Persian" poems

Kalamollah Khakpour

Zahra Taheri

Introduction

Every act of translation is mingled with some problems and challenges. Poetry translation may be more challenging than other types of translation due to the importance of both form and content in the type of interpretation and response evoked in the audience. In poetry translation one of the most essential issues to be addressed by the translator is whether to prefer the form over the content or vice versa. Talking about understanding poetry, we must be aware of the central two-fold approach to the rendering of poetry: it is necessary to know the literal sense as well as the symbolic or the meaning supposed to be understood by readers. Diction of poems should be considered seriously. Poets select words that completely express their feeling, thought and what they wish readers' response be .

Samuel and Frank (2000) state that the translation of poetry and figurative language is a more delicate matter requiring that more attention be given to how the forms of the source language are re-cast in the receptor language. Kopp (1998) states "a good translation discovers the "dynamics" of poetry, if not necessarily its 'mechanics' " (Dastjerdi, 2004: 5). The point to be noted here is that as Newmark (1988: 162) slates, literary translation is "...the most testing type of translation...". According to Rezai (2004. 1), "The word poetry, in fact comes from a Greek verb which means 'to make'. Poetry is a language that says more than ordinary language and says it with fewer words and in less space." Wendy Call is a writer, editor, and translator in Seattle. She is co-editor of Telling True Stories: A Nonfiction Writers Guide (Plume/Penguin, 2007) and is currently completing a book about village life and economic globalization in Mexico's Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

The first problem one encounters in attempting to translate poetry is the importance of both its meaning and form in the response created by it in the audience. Hence, the translator should make decision whether scarify the form for the meaning or vice versa. According to Nida & Taber (1964. p. 126) "the conflict between the dictates of form and content becomes especially important where the form of the message is highly specialized" as it is in poetry. Poetry is a means of expressing one nation's feelings and attitudes. First of all, some theoretical aspects related to poetry and translation will be presented. At the next step, the linguistic and extra linguistic analysis of the poetry will be offered.
